1. Single purpose
The UseGuide Recorder extension has a single purpose: to allow a signed-in UseGuide user to capture a screen recording, with optional microphone audio and click/navigation events, of a tab, window, or screen they explicitly choose using Chrome's native screen-picker, and upload that recording to their own UseGuide workspace so it can be turned into a step-by-step tutorial.
2. User data collection
The extension collects only the categories listed below, and only while the user has actively started a recording session. It does not collect data in the background.
- Personally Identifiable Information (PII): the signed-in user's name and email address, used only to associate uploaded recordings with the correct account.
- Authentication information: access and refresh tokens issued by the UseGuide web app and passed to the extension so uploads can be authenticated.
- Web history during recording only: the URL and page title of pages visited inside the recorded surface, used to label navigation steps.
- User activity during recording only: click, input, scroll, selection, and form-change events, used to generate accurate tutorial steps. Passwords and other sensitive inputs are masked before transmission.
- Website content during recording only: the visual screen content and, when explicitly enabled by the user, microphone and tab audio from the specific surface the user selected in Chrome's native picker.
The extension does not collect health, financial, password, personal communication, or location data.
3. How user data is used
- PII and auth tokens are used only to authenticate uploads into the user's own UseGuide workspace.
- Recorded content, web history, and user activity are processed to generate editable tutorials for the user.
- Extension data is not sold, rented, used for advertising, profiling, retargeting, or unrelated AI model training.
- The extension does not fetch or execute remote code; executable code is bundled in the published extension package.
4. How user data is stored
- On the user's device: authentication tokens are stored in Chrome local extension storage. Temporary recording chunks may be buffered locally until upload completes, then removed.
- On our backend: uploaded recordings, transcripts, and event logs are stored inside the user's UseGuide workspace. Access is restricted to authorised workspace members.
- Retention: recordings and generated assets are retained until the user deletes them or deletes their account. Local data is cleared when the user signs out or uninstalls the extension.
5. How user data is shared
Data collected by the extension is shared only with service providers required to deliver the user-initiated recording-to-tutorial workflow.
- Lovable Cloud infrastructure — account, workspace, database, and storage services.
- Railway — video transcoding worker infrastructure.
- OpenAI — speech-to-text transcription.
- Google Gemini — tutorial generation and translation.
- ElevenLabs — AI voice generation from approved scripts.
We do not share extension data with advertisers, data brokers, or third parties for unrelated purposes. We disclose data to law enforcement only when legally required.
6. Permissions justification
offscreen, scripting— required to capture the user-selected screen surface during an active recording.tabs, activeTab— required to track navigation changes during a recording so step order remains accurate.storage— required to persist authentication tokens and recording metadata locally.<all_urls>— required because tutorial recordings can span multiple domains that the user navigates between during the same recording.- Microphone access — optional, and requested only if the user enables microphone narration.
7. User controls
- The user starts every recording themselves and explicitly chooses the surface to share.
- The user can stop a recording at any time.
- The user can delete recordings, transcripts, and generated tutorials from their UseGuide workspace at any time.
- The user can sign out to invalidate stored tokens or uninstall the extension to clear locally stored extension data.
- The user can request account deletion by emailing hello@useguide.io.
8. Children
UseGuide and the UseGuide Recorder extension are not intended for individuals under 18. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
9. Policy updates
We may update this extension-specific Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the date at the top of this page.
